As the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) holding in Buenos Aires enters its high-level segment, yesterday, the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan, has expressed confidence that the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol would enhance sustainable development in developing countries through Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.

In his message to the august assembly, which included the Argentine President, Nestor Kirchener, which was delivered by the Executive Director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Mr. Klaus Toepfer, Annan also said that the Protocol's innovative use of market-based mechanisms to control greenhouse gas emissions will write a new and exciting chapter in the history of environmental agreements.

"The Protocol, sets up a solid system of support for sustainable development in developing countries, for example through the Clean Development Mechanism,"he said.

Development experts and delegates participating at the conference have expressed hopes that the struggling economies of developing economies could be kick-started with the injection of funds, which developed countries are expected to commit to CDM projects in developing countries.
